Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Director of Compliance!

About the role

Symetra is seeking an Assistant Director Compliance - Financial Crimes to join our Enterprise Compliance Department. The position will lead and oversee the Financial Crimes function, its initiatives and responsibilities across the company as well as represent Corporate Compliance on various regulatory compliance projects. This role is critical in directing Symetra's Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and OFAC compliance functions and controls as well as reporting mechanisms. Strong working knowledge of AML/OFAC compliance matters and regulatory technicalities as it pertains to a life insurance company will be important to undertake day-to-day activities.

What you will do

  • Develop, enhance, and implement comprehensive AML and OFAC compliance policies, procedures, and controls in accordance with regulatory requirements and life insurance industry best practices.
  • Oversee the monitoring, investigation, and reporting of suspicious activities, including alert review, case investigations, due diligence processes, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and suspicious activity reporting.
  • Provide strategic direction and guidance to financial crimes stakeholders in proactively and effectively managing financial crimes risks across the organization.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and controls reviews to identify potential vulnerabilities and areas for improvement within the AML and OFAC programs.
  • Manage the LexisNexis Bridger platform in maintaining and enhancing screening processes while continuing to centralize source data systems across the enterprise.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Technology & Operations Solutions, New Business, Legal, Risk Management, Special Investigations, Investments, Mortgage Loans, Procurement, and Finance, to ensure alignment and integration of financial crimes compliance with business objectives.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, internal and external auditors, and law enforcement authorities on matters related to AML, OFAC, and financial crimes compliance.
  • Provide training and guidance to employees on financial crimes requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Lead and mentor a team of compliance professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead a variety of Corporate Compliance projects and initiatives aimed at advancing the organization's regulatory compliance and adapting to regulatory changes.

Compensation

$110,300 - $183,800 annually plus eligibility for Company Annual Bonus

Who you are

  • A minimum of eight years of experience in a leadership or managerial role for AML, OFAC, and financial crimes compliance, or a similar position with direct experience in regulatory compliance
  • Thorough understanding of regulatory requirements for financial crimes as it relates to the life insurance industry, including the Bank Secrecy Act, USA PATRIOT Act, FinCEN, U.S. Department of Treasury OFAC, state insurance fraud, and state financial exploitation.
  • Proven track record of designing and implementing effective financial crimes compliance programs, including risk assessments, policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to identify and assess complex financial crime risks and develop practical solutions.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including the ability to motivate and inspire team members, drive results, and foster a culture of compliance.
  • Sound judgment, integrity, and ethical decision-making skills, with a commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
  • Demonstrated high level of personal integrity and confidentiality as well as an unwavering commitment to customers and partners.
  • Proven experience interacting with senior management and building constructive partnerships with diverse stakeholders, and challenging where required
  • Ability to articulate sensitive, complex or potentially contentious issues in a constructive manner and create appropriate solutions
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, and Word.
