Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in fundamental interfacial physics and chemistry of electrified interfaces. You will actively participate in the research developing a new capability for optimizing and fabricating electrodes for energy storage devices. This is an integrated experimental and computational project with a team of engineers and scientists that are interested in low temperature battery performance from atomistic interactions to macroscopic device performance.This position is in the Nanoscale, Surface, and Interface Science group of the Materials Science Division.

You will

  • Conduct research in battery science.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of interfacial reactions at anode and cathode surfaces using in situ imaging and spectroscopy.
  • Design and perform experiments quantifying interfacial processes such as metal nucleation and growth, solid-electrolyte-interface formation, and intercalation.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems.
  • Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Maintain and establish laboratory protocols.
  • Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • PhD in of Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Experience in operando techniques, such as atomic force microscopy, synchrotron-based spectroscopy, or other imaging or spectroscopic methods to monitor dynamic processes at interfaces.
  • Knowledgeable of the concepts of electrochemical interfaces and materials assembly
  • Experience with electrochemical analysis.
  • Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effectivepresentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
    Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with integrating experiments and modeling.
  • Experience with designing and modifying fluid cell geometries and troubleshooting electrochemical systems.
  • Knowledge in crystal growth, interface dynamics, electrochemistry, corrosion.

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years, open to those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
