Position Summary:

The Emergency Mental Health Provider (EMHP) will be the primary evaluator of patients in need of behavioral health assessment in the emergency department (ED) based on screening results or on presenting behavioral health concerns identified by the nursing staff at triage. The EMHP will participate in providing psychological evaluations, triage and brief crisis interventions including suicide risk assessment, substance use disorder assessment and safe disposition related to behavioral health needs. The EMHP is also responsible for administering rating scales and collecting patient reported outcomes measures for patients in the hospital ED and tracking the data. The EMHP will provide training to staff and providers and work to educate on trauma informed care practices through consultation, attending meetings, and reflected in patient care notes. The EMHP is expected to be collaborative with staff, providers, and facilities related to patients being treated. The EMHP will defer to the Designated Crisis Responder when appropriate based on severity of patient issues or for second opinions.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates age specific patient care considerations for the population served.
  • Demonstrates application of knowledge, skills, and behaviors in the physical, motor/sensory, cognitive, psychosocial, patient and family education areas.
  • Participates in brief psychological evaluation, assessment, and triage for patients with mental health crises, mental health issues, or substance use/abuse issues seen in the emergency department to facilitate next steps in resolving the presenting issue or moving to a higher level of care
  • Provides clinical, collateral, and psychosocial information to providers and staff to be used in treatment and disposition determination by provider.
  • Provides clear recommendations or next steps to patients and their significant support systems to promote continuity of care in situations where additional contact is needed to complete ED interventions such as crisis intervention, safety planning, or to facilitate referrals for ongoing treatment and safe discharge.
  • Provides an approach with patients and families that is culturally competent. Interacts effectively with diverse individuals of differing cultures, backgrounds, lifestyles, values, and religious practices.
  • Applies brief evidence-based interventions for anxiety, depression, PTSD, agitation, etc.
  • Develop and implement appropriate discharge plans for mental health and chemically dependent patients to ensure a smooth and appropriate transition to the next level of care Identifies specific individual and systemic barriers to discharge and coordinates with medical to address issues for a safe discharge in the timeliest manner possible.
  • Recommends referrals to departmental clinics and/or community agencies for services as needed to facilitate discharge.
  • Ensures that proper treatment and referral protocols are followed with respect to child abuse, elder abuse, sexual violence, domestic violence, consultation with specialty clinics, and referrals.
  • Documents intervention in patient's chart in compliance with department and hospital policy.
  • Acts as team member in coordinating assessments and discharge plans with other disciplines, physicians, nurses, patients, families, and providers:
  • Provides psychoeducation to patients and their families, in addition to providing naloxone training to patients and families when indicated.
  • Communicates clearly with the DCR to assure that timely evaluations are performed for patients who require this level of assessment and intervention.
  • Coordinates regularly with the Care Coordinator to refer patients and help with tracking patients to outpatient follow-up.
  • Maintain current knowledge of community resources, how to access them, and the regulations for access to them:
  • Coordinates with the Peer Recovery Coach when appropriate
  • Develop relationships with community partners, including court personnel, community hospitals, law enforcement, family members, and other community resources as needed, communicating pertinent information as needed.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and participate in both verbal and physical de-escalation techniques. Ability to excel in a stressful, constantly changing environment is required.
  • Completes progress notes and other required documentation in the electronic consumer files within the required timeframe.
  • Inform supervisor, and other members of the team as indicated, of issues/concerns related to individual clients
  • Adhere to all Agency Policies & Procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary case conferences as requested to improve the coordination of care for patients who have frequent recurring visits to the Emergency Department or other areas of the medical center and/or community provided services.
  • Attends meetings as requested
  • Trains staff and providers in behavioral health diagnoses, specific care needs, other as assigned topics, and trauma informed care.
  • Makes needed referrals to appropriate agencies and coordinates the delivery of services to patient or patient's parents to address the identified issues.
HIPAA
  • Responsible for upholding a culture of privacy and security in a highly confidential work environment (HIPAA covered entity service area)
  • Complies with all Catholic Charities policies and procedures that involve access to and safeguarding of client Protected health Information (all forms)
Job Requirements

Physical Requirements:

This position normally requires the physical demands of standing, walking, bending, lifting or performing other work requiring low physical exertion, talking and hearing on a regular basis to perform the job requirements. These physical demands are required up to 80% of the time. Position also requires ability to drive with adequate vision.

Non-Physical Requirements:

Education

  • Master's or doctoral degree in social work, mental health counseling, psychology or other related human services field that provides licensure consistent with state guidelines

Special Skills

  • Possess and utilize effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Preferred candidates have at least 2 years of mental health clinical experience and/or experience doing crisis stabilization; substance use clinical experience preferred.
  • Therapy and counseling: knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Demonstrate competency in providing cognitive and behavioral interventions within an emergency department.
  • Ability to be self-motivated, work independently and as a team member
  • Ability to represent the agency in a professional manner within the community
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred, but not required

Licensure, Registration, Certification

  • Valid Washington State driver's license and minimum required liability insurance for WA State
  • Must be deemed insurable as determined by Catholic Charities liability insurance provider
  • Agency Affiliated Counselor License, Associate and/or full licensure in Mental Health Counseling or Social Work
  • Recognition as an MHP based on licensure in WA State
  • Completion of HCA sponsored Trauma Informed Care, De-escalation Techniques, and Harm Reduction training.
