Position Overview

Stanley is seeking manager to further grow the testing team and in-house lab capabilities. The test team's main function is to support new product development, R&D, competitive assessment, evaluation of defective product and new technology applications as well as field testing.

The Test Laboratory Manager works within the Quality and Compliance department but will interface with Quality Managers, Design Engineering, and Innovation Teams as well.


This role is tasked with overseeing all Test Lab operations as well as all Test Lab personnel or other departments as technical experts. You will be responsible for mentoring team members as we look to expand the team. You will provide guidance in developing testing standards and guiding the team to execute successfully.

You will be responsible for growing the lab capabilities to meet product development and quality needs. You will also be managing the test space and its day-to-day operation. The test lab manager will be responsible for developing industry standard test protocols, ensuring testing meets Engineering and Quality standards and guaranteeing execution to the test requirements.

This role will also constantly evaluate inhouse and outside test lab capabilities with the aim to reduce speed of tests, further improve test efficacy (better correlation and reduced costs). The test team will also be the testing experts to suppliers by providing detailed test standards.

What You Will Do

  • Run and maintain Stanley's dedicated test lab including daily operations and budget.
  • Build, manage and lead a team of test engineers and lab technicians who are responsible for conducting testing on Stanley product.
  • Partner with the design engineering team to create, document and implement repeatable test procedures for all product lines.
  • End to end performance and design validation and verification
  • Maintaining the laboratory and equipment. Keeping the samples and equipment orderly and clean. Working with outside vendors to maintain equipment calibration. Evaluates systems; makes recommendations for updating facility equipment, processes, and procedures to increase efficiency and throughput.
  • Lead development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the lab's standard operating procedures, including intake and outbound work flow, report templates and storage, test tracking and equipment utilization
  • Lead short- and long-term strategy development for test lab and execution supporting inline and seasonal products
  • Manage resources according to business needs and priorities
  • Updating laboratory capabilities to meet specification and verification needs.
  • Working with Product Managers and Design Engineering to support competitive benchmark testing and performance analysis. Support any new technology and material applications.
  • Creating reports and maintaining proper documentation that meet the test requestor's objective and are easy to understand.
  • Create testing protocol library for each individual product line that is easily accessible to the stakeholders.
  • Track and manage preventive maintenance and calibration needs for all key equipment.
  • Coach and support test engineers and technicians to ensure individual and business success.


Who You Are

  • Direct experience working as a Test Lab supervisor.
  • Experience mentoring team members.
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks; good time-management, organizational, problem-prevention and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with industry standards; ISO, ASTM, ANSI, AATCC, CPSC, etc.
  • Understanding of measurement and inspection equipment, such as calipers, data loggers, force gages, temperature chambers, video measuring system. Knowledge of PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) a plus.
  • Ability to perform a Gauge R&R Study.
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software or simulation a plus.


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or above in engineering or other science related field.
  • 8-10 years of related experience preferred.
  • At least 6 years' experience managing a team.
  • At least 5 years' experience managing a Lab and its associated P&L.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing; plastic injection and metal forming, textiles a plus.
  • Working knowledge of various physics principles and metrology.

  • You will be a key member of the Operations team and will report to the Director of Quality and Compliance.
  • Daily work hours flex to build collaborative partnerships and timely communications across multiple geographies and time zones.
  • Directly and indirectly leads, motivates, and influences a global team, spanning multiple regions and cultures.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.


Salary Range

$120,000 - $150,000 annually.

The base pay range for this position is for a successful candidate within the state listed. The successful candidate's actual pay will be based on multiple factors, such as work location, job-related knowledge, skills, qualifications, and experience.
