To strengthen our Rare Disease Medical team, we are looking for a talented individual to fill the position of: Global Medical Operations Lead - Rare Diseases to be based either in Boston or Atlanta, US (preferred) or in our HQ in Brussels, Belgium.

The successful candidate will strengthen our operations in Rare Disease Medical Organization with an execution focus. They will use structured approaches from project management, agile operating principles, planning and tracking methodologies, communicating and collaborative skills to deliver on assigned projects either directly with 1) Global Medical Indication Teams (GMITs); and/or 2) Global Evidence Generation Teams (GETs); and/or 3) while supporting key projects on capability enabling, process improvements, systems or tools implementation of medical organization in Global to LOC. Successful candidates will have an exceptional understanding of drug development matrix operations and a fairly good understanding of industry Medical Affairs organizations and capabilities - what they do and how they work together and with other functions.

While reporting to the Head of Rare Medical Strategy, Operations and Digital, this individual will support in one of more of the 3 operational categories below:

  1. Global Medical Indication Team (s)(GMIT) Operations: GMITs are core functional medical teams focused per indication in the Rare Medical Organization and are led by the Global Medical Indication Leads (GMIL). You will serve as operations partner and team enabler to ensure cross-functionally aligned execution of medical strategies and tactics. The Operations role will bring forward, to each indication team she/he supports, medical operations best practices that are consistent and structured to not only drive and track successful completion of medical tactics within the Medical Affairs Strategic Plans (MASP) and launch plans but ensure impact by designing and communicating (in partnership with GMIT) regular KPIs and dashboards for each indication leading up to successful launch and post launch LCM of rare assets. The expectations on structure and operating principles are under the direction and in alignment with the Head of MSO and Digital.
  2. Global Evidence- Generation Team (GET) Operations: GETs are medically led teams but involve a broader membership from Development, Commercial, Access etc. and these teams ensure an integrated strategic evidence generation plan (ISEG) is developed and executed per indication. You will serve as operational partner and team enabler to ensure cross-functionally aligned development of ISEG with Evidence Generation Leads and Head. The operations role will bring forward, to each GET she/he supports, medical operations best practices that are consistent and structured to not only drive development of ISEG but utilizing best practices in meeting planning, execution and follow-up.
  3. Key projects planning and operations: The Rare Disease medical organization at UCB has a vision and mission to ensure we build class leading capabilities and teams with agile and efficient WoW in global, regions and local teams (G2L). This operations role will be a program management best practices expert and will partner with the project lead SME to ensure we utilize best practices that are consistent and structured to quickly and efficiently support the project leads in the execution of the project - within the scope, cost and timeline expected. These projects require a good understanding of drug development and commercialization but in addition must rely on deep understanding of UCB (its transversal capabilities in finance, procurement, IT, compliance, legal etc.), RDO and RD Medical G2L WoW. The impact of these projects is wide and improves effectiveness across many functions.

Additional operational projects may be assigned including patient engagement and advocacy operations, congress planning and execution etc.

Interested? For this position you'll need the following education, experience and skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

Position expected at associate director level in biopharmaceutical industry and following education:

  • Bachelor's degree or MSc/MS with 7 - 8 years of experience, PharmD or PhD with 3-4 years of experience
  • MBA or business degree preferred
  • Project Management certification and/or change management experience preferred
  • Experience in Rare Diseases is plus but not required
  • Knowledge and understanding cross-functional matrix related to pharmaceutical drug development
  • IT savvy and analytical always looking to provide innovative solutions to medical team issues - excellent PowerPoint, excel and other data tools/applications. Quick learner of new UCB applications
  • Experience in contracting and negotiation and tracking of external partners and agencies is preferred
  • Experience budget management and tracking required
  • Attention and high level of emphasis to ethics and compliance guidelines and standards
  • Willing and able to travel (<20%)
