Wage : $22.26 - $27.56/hour

Discretionary Sign On Bonus $3,300 - $4,000

Monday to Friday - 8 am to 5 pm

Position Summary:

The Emergency Department Certified Peer Counselor will provide direct services and support to those who have experienced an incident related to substance use/abuse and/or mental health issues and are being treated in the Emergency Department.

Responsibilities:

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide direct services to individuals receiving services in the Emergency Department following revival from an opioid overdose, or other related alcohol and/or drug related events
  • Provide education on opioid overdoses and obtaining Naloxone.
  • Provide education and support for those receiving treatment for mental health issues.
  • Provide support to patients with drug, alcohol, or mental health issues waiting for the Designated Crisis Responder.
  • Provide support and resource information to family members, as necessary and appropriate.
  • Enhance opportunities for individuals to become familiar with the local community resources available.
  • Assist individuals to identify and develop natural community support to foster independence and community integration.
  • Contribute to a welcoming atmosphere and keeping the environment clean, comfortable, and safe for guests.
  • Promotes programs and other support services offered with local community partners.
  • Maintains collaborative relationships with local treatment teams and in-patient treatment facilities to assist clients with treatment needs.
  • Models and exemplifies recovery principles to show by example that recovery is possible and attainable and utilizes personal and professional experience to promote wellness and recovery.
  • Complete all data tracking information at the end of each shift.
  • Develop relationships with community partners, including, community hospitals, law enforcement, family members, and other community resources as needed, communicating pertinent information as needed.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and participate in both verbal and physical de-escalation techniques. Ability to excel in a stressful, constantly changing environment is required.
  • Completes progress notes and other required documentation in the electronic consumer files within the required timeframe.
  • Inform supervisor, and other members of the team as indicated, of issues/concerns related to individual clients
  • Adhere to all Agency Policies & Procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Attends meetings as requested

Qualities of a Certified Peer Counselor working in Emergency Department

  • Because of the nature of the environment in which we are working and with whom we are working, it is imperative that Emergency Department Recovery Coaches are:
    • Trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive Non-judgmental / Open-Minded
    • Patient
    • Stable in their own recovery (if applicable)
    • Comfortable working in the emergency department
    • Able to work compassionately with a wide variety of people
    • Respectful of hospital protocol
    • Understanding of values and boundaries
    • Professional and positive representations of the recovery process.
    • Knowledgeable about multiple pathways to recovery and help clients to access those resources to enter recovery.

HIPAA

  • Responsible for upholding a culture of privacy and security in a highly confidential work environment (HIPAA covered entity service area)
  • Complies with all Catholic Charities policies and procedures that involve access to and safeguarding of client Protected health Information (all forms)

Job Requirements:

The following requirements are those that are normally required for performance of this position. Physical Requirements:

This position normally requires the physical demands of standing, walking, bending, lifting or performing other work requiring low physical exertion, talking and hearing on a regular basis to perform the job requirements. These physical demands are required up to 80% of the time. Position also requires ability to drive with adequate vision.

Non-Physical Requirements:

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be a self-identified consumer of Behavioral Health Services and successfully complete Peer Counselor training and pass an examination provided by the Mental Health Division (MHD)

Experience

  • Sustained recovery or direct experience with addiction: 2 years Certified Training as a Peer Counselor
  • A self-identified person (or a person with lived experience) in recovery from a substance use disorder, who meets the requirements of 2 years of continuous recovery, and who can otherwise demonstrate stability in their recovery.

Special Skills and Abilities Required

  • Organized, self-motivated, creative, and committed to working in a diverse environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and comfortable with working with all levels of professionals.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word & Excel), working on computer for data entry. Comfortable working with various data platforms.
  • Ability to represent the agency in a professional manner within the community
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required

Licensure, Registration, Certification

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license, required minimum liability insurance for WA State
  • Must be deemed insurable as determined by Catholic Charities’ liability insurance provider
  • Peer Certification Training or Certificate, Required
  • Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration
  • Completion of HCA sponsored Trauma-Informed Care, De-Escalation Techniques, and Harm Reduction training

Employment is conditional upon:

  • Being cleared by criminal background check and fingerprinting when required
  • Flu Shot, TB Test and COVID-19 Vaccination
