The Director, Shipboard HumanResources/Employee Relations (HR/ER) position is at a dynamic crossroads for Holland AmericaGroup, integrating strategic initiatives and approaches to Crew engagement andretention and managing day to day Crew issues and concerns. From serving as aproactive business partner to Shipboard leadership, to ensuring compliance andresponsiveness to Crew demands, Shipboard HR/ER is at the heart of the Crewexperience. As Director of Shipboard HR/ER you will be a fully contributingmember of the Fleet HR Core Leadership Team, focused on strategic, integratedand excellent HR service delivery. Specifically, you will:

  • Lead Shipboard Human Resources/Employee Relations teams in the development, implementation and administration of strategic, business and operational projects, programs and policies as well as put in place the framework for high quality customer service for all Shipboard employees
  • Ensure all associated processes, metrics, objectives and compliance requirements are achieved promptly and accurately
  • Support each Brand's and HA Group's Core Values and lead by example to ensure exceptional customer service is delivered at all times
  • Function as a strategic business partner, consulting with Shipboard and Shoreside management and providing tools and resources in various areas such as performance consulting, conflict management and crew welfare
  • Direct the development and implementation of approved employee relations policies, programs and practices
  • Fully align Shipboard HR/ER with other Fleet HR functions, such as Learning & Development, Workforce Management and Analytics
  • Ensure that HA Group employment practices and approaches demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion in the workplace and full participation of all crew members

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Shipboard HR/ER department including activities involving employee issues, investigations, appeals, compliance, strategic planning and department restructuring
  • Handle escalated employment issues and consult with Sr. Vice President of Fleet HR and Legal when appropriate
  • Monitor employee relations to identify trends, issues and high risk situations
  • Communicate information to senior management with recommendations for resolution
  • Implement surveys and other employee feedback mechanisms gather and analyze pertinent data on employee welfare
  • Oversee the development and monitoring of shipboard programs to promote positive employee relations, employee appreciation and recognition, including driving initiatives as the chairman of the Crew Welfare Committee
  • Manage 24/7 operation required for management of Crew and Management issues
  • Provide constructive feedback by coaching employees regularly and effectively resolving disciplinary problems
  • Exhibit strong leadership skills by clearly defining goals, providing motivation, and building trust among employees
  • Manage employees by communicating department objectives, providing necessary resources, and setting clear deadlines and expectations
  • Establish employee engagement metrics to measure the success of programs and guide future initiatives
  • Provide ongoing analysis and recommendations for program enhancements or new initiatives that focus on increasing retention, performance, and employee welfare
  • Provide support and consultation to departments on business strategies, employment practices and employee relations issues
  • Develop specific coaching plans as required for management identified for succession planning or when requiring extra guidance
  • Assist Senior Management in formulating and communicating the Company's culture and directing it towards improved business results
  • Serve as a role model for Company values for internal and external customers while fostering a positive work environment Lead the Company strategy to ensure effective employee recognition programs are developed and efficiently implemented
  • Educate and monitor management actions and decisions to maintain compliance with Company policies, MLC, labor and other legal requirements.
  • Follows all Company policies and procedures during daily operations of the job
  • Advisor for shipboard management on ILO180 Compliance; Employee Relations Investigations

Please note that this position could sit in our Seattle, WA office or our Santa Clarita, CA office

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required in Business, HR or related fields. Advanced degree preferred
  • A minimum of eight years progressively responsible Human Resources leadership experience, specifically in the Employee Relations area (familiarity with maritime law and experience in the Cruise industry is strongly preferred)
  • A solid track record of achievement as a strategic HR business partner and advisor to senior executives
  • Ability to analyze workforce trends and identify initiatives to drive organizational performance
  • Ability to translate business needs into human resources priorities and ensure alignment
  • Strong leadership, coaching and consensus-building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and act tactically
  • Proven success building relationships and operating in a dynamic and fast-paced, complex, high profile environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting an inclusive work environment
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Commitment to streamlining processes to drive efficiencies and improvements
  • Demonstratedsuccess working as a member of a senior management team - both in engaging withexecutive peers and managing assigned department
  • Passion for excellence, continuous improvement and enhancing ability of Crew to serve better the needs of our passengers
